ESB Networks’ annual Winter Resilience Plan plays a crucial role in mitigating storm-related risks, safeguarding the continuity of power supply for communities nationwide.

This winter, KTL team members like Killian Smyth, Access Consultant are out surveying forestry corridors, engaging landowners, and mapping the areas most vulnerable to storm damage.

The work is detailed, technical, and time-sensitive—aimed at preventing outages.

“Ground conditions and reduced daylight are tough,” Killian says.

“But every survey helps protect homes and communities from outages.”

Safety remains paramount across all KTL operations. Lone working protocols—such as usage of the StaySafe app—combined with PPE requirements ensure all field teams remain safe throughout the project lifecycle.

Beyond the technical nature of the work, the community aspect stands out. “What I enjoy most about Winter Resilience projects is the people you meet along the way. Every day is different, and it’s very interesting,” Killian shares.

From farmers and foresters to planners, local residents, and ESB Networks own teams, the programme represents a collaborative national effort toward grid reliability.
