The KTL Power Pollers Francis Keenan and Shane Kelly working on behalf of ESB Networks, are the boots-on-the-ground team essential to ensuring that power poles are positioned and replaced safely and efficiently across the country.
It’s skilled, physically demanding, and safety-critical work—and no two days are the same.
Francis: “Planning and safety come first”
Since November 2023, Francis has brought discipline and structure to his work as a Poller. He starts every day with a clear plan, “the most important part is planning and organising your day in an effective and efficient manner,” Francis shares.
He conducts full site safety assessments; ensures all safety zones are properly established and works with the Person in Charge of Work (PICW), all before work commences. Challenges like weather conditions or accessing private land are all part of the job—but Francis takes pride in seeing the job through.
“I enjoy working in the outdoors and being part of a great team. There are real opportunities to grow in this role.”
Shane: “It’s the best of both worlds”
Shane brings a technical perspective to the role, he’s hands-on with all plant and machinery used for putting up the poles.
His work has taken him across Ireland; he could sometimes be working in 3–4 counties in a single week—making flexibility and adaptability crucial.
“If you want to travel and see new things, this job gives you the best of both worlds. You get to travel, meet new people, solve real challenges—it’s work that matters.”
Across both Francis and Shane, one theme stands out: safety is everything.
With daily briefings, certified training, and a safety-first culture, KTL’s Pollers are equipped to perform under pressure while ensuring the highest standards on behalf of ESB Networks.
