From Classroom to Field: Jack Weeks’ Journey Through KTL’s CNFE Apprenticeship

For many aspiring engineers, the traditional academic route feels like the only path forward. But for Jack Weeks, that path didn’t quite fit.
“I originally went down the traditional academic route and studied at university for a year and a half but I discovered full-time study wasn’t for me.”
Instead of continuing down a route that didn’t align with how he learned best, Jack began exploring alternatives—and found the Cellular Network Field Engineer (CNFE) Apprenticeship with KTL.
“What interested me was the opportunity to combine working with studying… it allows me to apply my learning into real-world situations, which helps me understand things more quickly and thoroughly.”
Challenging the Apprenticeship Stereotype
Like many, Jack entered the programme with certain expectations.
“I expected to be the lackey on a large team, doing menial jobs with minimal opportunity to develop my skills.”
But that assumption didn’t last long.
“I found this not to be the case… immediately I was being taught the skills required and given opportunities to be useful.”
From day one, Jack wasn’t just observing he was contributing.
A Role That Fits the Individual
Having grown up around the telecoms industry, the transition felt natural.
“I live near Vodafone’s HQ, and I’ve always been aware of the industry. I also have family members in it, so it felt like a natural path.”
But what really stood out was the nature of the work itself.
“CNFE involves complex work, hands-on tasks, and a fair amount of driving all things I wanted in a job.”
No Two Days the Same
The CNFE apprenticeship offers a dynamic, fast-paced experience.
“A typical week is quite varied. I work the first four days, and Fridays are dedicated to apprenticeship tasks like workshops and independent learning.”
In the field, Jack has already been involved in:
● Site surveys
● Report writing
● Data collection
● Training and shadowing
“These tasks can take anywhere from an hour to multiple days.”
From New Starter to Valued Team Member
One of the biggest surprises?
“How quickly I felt like a valuable member of the team.”
“From the start, I was given responsibility and trust my work actually contributed to the business.”
That sense of ownership has been key to his rapid development.
Skills That Go Beyond Technical
Through the programme, Jack has developed more than just technical expertise.
“I’ve learned time management, how to balance work and study, confidence in taking ownership, and how a workplace actually functions.”
With regular check-ins and a strong support system, growth is continuous.
“I’m encouraged to ask as many questions as I need no matter how ‘dumb’ they may seem.”
A Culture That Accelerates Growth
At KTL, mentorship plays a crucial role.
“A good mentor acknowledges that you’re new, sets realistic goals, and supports you while pushing you outside your comfort zone.”
This culture makes it easier for apprentices to settle in and push forward.
Real Progress in Just Weeks
Despite being early in the programme, Jack is already seeing results.
“The most rewarding thing so far has been seeing my ability and knowledge increase day by day… to the point where I can already work in the field on my own.”
Why Apprenticeships Work
For Jack, the conclusion is clear:
“I would most definitely recommend choosing an apprenticeship. It’s the best way to learn, gain real experience from day one, build industry skills, earn qualifications, and get paid.”
Final Thought
KTL’s CNFE Apprenticeship isn’t just about training, it's about transformation.
Or as Jack’s journey shows, it’s about finding a path that works and turning it into a career.
