Today marks 40 years since the first ever mobile phone call was made in Ireland.

On 11 December 1985, the country took its first step into a new era of connectivity, marking the beginning of mobile telecommunications as part of everyday life.

At the time, this was groundbreaking technology. Early mobile handsets were large, “brick-like” and costly, and primarily used by business professionals.

Coverage was limited and network capacity was modest. Yet the moment represented a shift in what was possible for personal and business communication in Ireland.

For KTL, this milestone reflects our own long journey in telecommunications. Since 1998, almost three decades on, we have partnered with mobile network operators and infrastructure providers to design, build, upgrade, and maintain the networks that connect communities across Ireland and the UK. Some of our current Directors, Peter Dwyer and the founder of KTL Tony K. worked on mobile networks since 1995.
