Across the UK and Ireland, women remain significantly underrepresented in engineering roles. Recent research shows that just 16.5% of engineers in the UK and only 12% in Ireland are female — figures that highlight the persistent gender gap in a critical industry.
At KTL, we are proud to be leading the way toward change. Women make up 20% of our overall workforce — a proportion that’s significantly higher than the national averages. Even more encouraging is the representation in our back-office functions, where 33% of staff are female.
“We’re incredibly proud that overall, 20% of our workforce is female — well above the industry average in this traditionally male-dominated field. It’s a clear sign of the progress we’re making and building on at KTL.”
— Peter Dwyer, Chief Commercial Officer
KTL is committed to building a culture of inclusivity — one where talent and skill thrive regardless of gender. From engineering services to leadership and support functions, women at KTL are helping to shape the future of connectivity and infrastructure.
A big part of that success is KTLFlex — our fully flexible approach to work. We know that many talented people hesitate to pursue engineering careers because of rigid working patterns.
“With KTLFlex, most non-site roles can be carried out remotely or in hybrid mode. As long as core hours are covered, colleagues have the freedom to structure the rest of their day around personal commitments. Whether it’s childcare, eldercare, or simply a preference for working at different times, our people are trusted to find the balance that works for them.”
— Sinead Larkin, HR Manager
Many of our female colleagues have shared how this flexibility has empowered them to balance career ambitions with personal commitments:
Davia Taylor:
“KTLFlex gives me the freedom to care for my dogs (I’d always wanted one but only committed after a couple of years at KTL when I felt stable enough to be at home more). It’s also helped me feel more comfortable in my own skin. I used to wear a lot of makeup daily, driven by insecurities and societal expectations, but now — thanks to working from home — I barely ever wear it. I hadn’t realised how much that would change me, and it’s actually very refreshing!”
Rebecca Jue Wong:
“I really enjoy the flexibility of KTL. Working from home has helped me focus more deeply and improve my productivity. Being able to work remotely from my homeland, China, has been invaluable. As a foreign employee based in Ireland, it gives me precious time with my family, allowing me to experience the warmth of home life while maintaining close family ties — all while delivering on my responsibilities and career goals.”
Lynda Somers:
“I really appreciate the remote work option that KTL has maintained. Although I miss daily conversations with coworkers in the office, I now enjoy different aspects of life that weren’t possible before. One major benefit is that I can still play GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) football with my local club. Previously, I’d have to rush to make training or a game, but now I don’t — and neither my work nor my sport suffers.”
Andreea Marin:
“For me, working from home is more than a perk — it’s a game changer. Skipping the commute gives me valuable time with my family, and being able to design a workspace that suits me has brought more balance to my day. The result? I feel more focused, productive, and fulfilled.”
Georgia Georgakaki:
“I’ve been working fully remotely under KTLFlex, and it’s been a smooth experience so far. The flexibility really supports focus and productivity, while also allowing me to maintain a healthy balance between work and family life.”
