Walking the Line: Eric Martin - KTL Patrolling Supervisor, Auditor and Trainer working on behalf of ESB Networks

In the Irish midlands, there is a calm, reliable force making sure the electrical infrastructure is kept safe—while supporting and empowering those he trains and mentors.

Meet Eric Martin working with KTL on behalf of ESB Networks in the critical maintenance of Ireland’s LV (Low Voltage <1,000V) and MV (Medium Voltage 1kV–33kV) network.

What’s involved in the role?

Eric oversees patrollers who inspect overhead line electrical infrastructure (poles, lines, equipment) to ensure they are safe.

Eric’s days are anything but routine. Whether he’s conducting audits, mentoring new patrollers, or resolving on-the-ground issues, his goal is simple: maintain safety, ensure quality, and support his team.

He’s responsible for:

• Regular patrols and on-site inspections of LV and MV electrical work

• Guiding patrollers through hands-on training

• Ensuring all safety and quality protocols from ESB Networks are followed to the letter

• Issuing and checking work for compliance and accuracy

  
  

Every inspection Eric lead’s is a chance to prevent outages, protect communities, and safeguard both people and livestock. And it’s personal: “I don’t see this as box-ticking,” he says. “It’s about making sure people are safe—and helping the next person do their job well.”

Eric’s journey started in 2013 as a trainee lines person. From the moment he climbed his first pole—at the urging of a local farmer friend—he knew he’d found his path. His natural ability and work ethic guided him quickly through the ranks.

The work isn’t always easy. From navigating rough terrain and braving harsh weather, to working closely with landowners—patrolling is a demanding and varied role. But under Eric’s guidance, every patroller is fully equipped, supported, and safe.
