Nora Rubene, KTL Project Coordinator celebrates Lativa Proclamation Day
Every year on November 18th, Latvia commemorates its Proclamation Day, a significant milestone in its history. This day marks the anniversary of the declaration of independence from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1918.
Nora shares her insights into the significance of Proclamation Day:
"18th of November in Latvia is like a birthday celebration for the whole country. Year 1918 is when we proclaimed Latvia, a day symbolising our independence. On this day, people tend to have a nice meal on their tables with decorations in the colours of the flag. People like to light candles as a remembrance."
She further elaborates on her personal traditions:
"Usually, I would like to be in Latvia and celebrate with my friends and family by having a nice dinner, watching the military parade, and enjoying the light displays across Riga. We would end the night with fireworks by the River Daugava, sipping champagne."
Latvia's Proclamation Day is a time of national pride and unity. Citizens across the country participate in various commemorative events, including:
Torchlight Processions: Thousands gather in cities like Riga to march with lit torches, symbolising the enduring spirit of the Latvian people.
Public Events and Concerts: Festive gatherings, concerts, and cultural performances are held to celebrate the nation's heritage.
Fireworks Displays: Spectacular firework shows illuminate the night sky, adding a touch of magic to the celebrations.
