KTL has successfully completed works on the Corderry–Garvagh 110 kV line, a vital circuit serving the Black Bank Wind Farm in County Cavan. The project, undertaken on behalf of ESB Networks (ESBN), reinforces the region’s electricity infrastructure—safeguarding supply for customers while directly supporting Ireland’s renewable energy network.
The Corderry–Garvagh 110 kV line required essential upgrades due to woodpecker damage on several timber pole sets. The immediate scope involved replacing pole sets 5, 7, 25, and 26, with further works planned for 2026.
Initial problems were identified with the apparatus following Storm Eowyn on pole sets 5 and 26. Although an immediate replacement was planned, access challenges due to difficult terrain delayed the work. KTL dispatched one of its experienced HV teams—skilled in mountain and bog terrain—to survey the sites. The initial visit proved challenging as access maps were incomplete and satellite imagery could only reach nearby roadways. With persistence, the team were introduced to a local forester, who provided detailed maps and boundary information. This collaboration allowed KTL’s HV management team to devise a safe and effective plan to complete the work to their usual high standards.
The project was delivered in line with two ESBN/Black Bank Wind Farm outages:
● First outage: Replacement of pole sets 5 and 26
● Second outage: Replacement of pole sets 7 and 25
These milestones were achieved despite adverse weather and challenging ground conditions.
The biggest challenge was creating access to the line. Originally constructed in the 1980s using helicopters, the route had no permanent right of way. To deliver the works,
KTL:
● Deployed ground protection to stabilise treacherous bogland.
● Cleared 3 km of overgrown forestry track to establish workable access.
● Used tractors and small low loaders to transport mats into tight, restricted areas where conventional plant could not reach.
This resourcefulness enabled the team to complete the pole replacements safely and efficiently.
The Corderry–Garvagh 110 kV circuit directly distributes power from the Black Bank Wind Farm, making it an essential link in Ireland’s green energy supply chain. By reinforcing this network, it is providing long-term stability and resilience of wind-powered electricity distribution.
The proactive replacement of damaged poles acts as a storm-prevention measure—reducing the risk of weather-related outages and ensuring a more reliable supply for customers.
For KTL, one factor stood out above all others: teamwork. Despite persistent rainfall and demanding bog conditions, the crews pulled together to deliver.
As Kevin Cummins put it: “Team spirit got us through this one. The work was tough—rain, muck, and bog every day—but the collaboration across our teams and with ESBN ensured we got it done safely and to the highest standard.”
While this phase of work is complete, KTL will return in 2026 to carry out further pole replacements, ensuring the Corderry–Garvagh line continues to deliver clean, renewable energy to the grid with maximum resilience.
