When Kate Brennan first stepped into the world of construction, she probably didn’t imagine her path would lead her to become a Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Advisor at KTL’s Power Division. “I didn’t start out in health and safety,” Kate shares honestly. “After school, I took a gap year to figure things out. I eventually chose construction management because construction and engineering were the only subjects I truly enjoyed.”
Her early career saw working on one of Ireland’s largest construction projects, a €30 billion development with more than 3,000 workers on site each day. While the experience was valuable, Kate craved more variation and deeper purpose in her day-to-day work. This led to a bold decision: she packed her bags and moved to Canada.
“I loved engineering, but after a while, it felt like every day was the same,” she says. “So I took a career break and moved to Canada for two years. When I came back and returned to engineering, I found myself in the same place mentally doing the same thing over and over.”
But deep down, there was always a pull toward safety and care—toward something more people-focused. It wasn’t too late to pivot. Kate began researching health and safety courses in Ireland and found a part-time Level 7 programme at UCD. While still working in engineering, she slowly dipped her toes into SHEQ work.
“It was hard to balance both,” she admits, “but I knew it was time for a change.”
Kate updated her CV and connected with a recruitment agency. Her first interview? KTL. “The moment I researched KTL, I was drawn in by their reputation in the power lines industry and their clear commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. I knew this was the kind of team I wanted to be part of.”
Fast forward one year, and that leap of faith has turned into a journey of growth and purpose.
Company culture
From day one, Kate could feel that SHEQ was a core part of the company’s ethos and culture.
“There’s a genuine commitment from both management and crews to prioritise safety, deliver quality work, and protect the environment,” she says. “What struck me most was how everyone takes ownership—not just of their own safety, but of those around them. That culture made it easier for me to integrate and contribute right away.”
Whether she’s on-site conducting audits, supporting investigations, leading toolbox talks, or reviewing documentation in the office, Kate’s role is dynamic, fast-paced, and impactful. And that’s exactly how she likes it.
“One of the things I enjoy most is that no two days are the same,” she explains. “Every day brings new challenges and the chance to make a real difference.”
Building connections
Kate speaks with pride about the relationships she’s built across departments—from Low Voltage (LV)/Medium Voltage (MV) to High Voltage (HV), from patrolling teams to project managers.
“To me, one of the most rewarding achievements is getting to experience the full scope of the power division,” she shares. “SHEQ is most effective when it’s a shared responsibility and being part of a collaborative environment like this has been extremely fulfilling.”
Along the way, she’s been supported not just by her crew, but by her SHEQ teammates as well. “Whenever challenges come up—unfamiliar situations, complex regulations, site issues—the team support each other and it’s invaluable.”
She also notes the professional development KTL has offered, including further training and certifications. “Knowing the company is investing in my growth motivates me to bring my best every day.”
Seasonal shifts, year-round commitment
With summer in full swing, Kate is particularly mindful of the new risks that arise. “Heat exhaustion, dehydration, sun exposure—they’re all serious concerns for the guys working outdoors,” she explains. “We’re proactive about it. Regular hydration breaks, shaded rest areas, sun-protective PPE—those are all part of our summer safety push.”
Equipment checks, fire risk awareness, and environmental care are also stepped up during warmer months. “While the weather may change, our priorities don’t: safety, health, environment, and quality always come first.”
Heart of the work
At the core of everything Kate does is people. Whether it's helping prevent incidents or simply being a trusted presence on-site, the human connection is what drives her.
“The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that I’m helping to keep people safe and projects running smoothly. It’s not just about checklists—it’s about care.”
She recalls talking with members of the public during storm recovery work. “They were so thankful to our crews for braving long hours and harsh conditions to restore power. Moments like that remind you why we do what we do.”
For others interested in SHEQ
Kate’s advice to anyone considering a career in SHEQ is simple: Go for it.
“Stay curious, be proactive, and genuinely care. SHEQ isn’t just about policies – it’s about creating safe, responsible, high-performing environments. Communicate well, build trust, and never stop learning.”
She adds, “And find a company that supports your growth like KTL has supported mine. The right team makes all the difference.”
When asked to sum up her first year at KTL in just three words, Kate doesn’t hesitate:
“Challenging. Rewarding. Supportive.”
Every word reflects the courage it takes to change direction, the joy of doing work that matters, with a team that cares and supports.
