ESBN - Electricity Supply Board Networks (ESBN) High Voltage Project

KTL-EUP successfully completed Cable Percussive and Rotary borehole Investigations to enable the design for a 220kV replacement Tower on behalf of ESB Networks

On the 9th of March 2020, ESB Networks awarded KTL-EUP the job of foundation investigation at Tower 30, Knockraha-Rafeen (220kV line).

KTL-EUP project managed the works by accepting the role of Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS) for EMP (Engineering and Major Projects) on behalf of ESB Networks. The job required the completion of a comprehensive site investigation at Intermediate Suspension Tower 30, the purpose of which was to facilitate a final foundation design for a replacement tower, near Fota Wildlife Park, County Cork.

It was determined that the site required a full borehole soil investigation to rock refusal strata as it was expected that the foundation design solution, based on previous evidence, was likely be a pile design.

A borehole soil investigation involves the drilling of a deep, narrow hollow cavity in the ground (borehole) up to 15 metres deep to obtain a soil sample. This sample is then studied in a laboratory to determine the stratum description at different depths along the length of the borehole. A geotechnical report is subsequently developed to aid with the design of the foundation for the new tower location.

Colm Moloney, Consultant for high voltage projects at ESB was wholly impressed by the works from initiation to completion. “I was particularly impressed with the Health and Safety management on site and their attention to detail. The preliminary Health and Safety plans issued aren’t always read and understood to the highest level that was evident in this case, and I would like thank EU Power for their meticulous efforts.”

As PSCS for the Investigation Works, it was a lot of hard work to ensure the works were kicked off safely from mobilisation to completion. All staff involved rolled up their sleeves and delivered the works to the highest standards.
