Overhead Line Design Engineer

Job Scope

To ensure Overhead line designs are completed to client specification through CAD Design and Surveying to support the delivery of MV overhead line projects including new build and upgrade schemes. This role will focus on ESB-compliant MV OHL design, design survey processing, and structured Excel-based project deliverables.

Needs to Have

  • Strong working knowledge of Autocad/ GDesigner/ or other design software 

  • Experience with ESB MV OHL standards 

  • Understanding of reconductoring and phase conversion schemes 

  • Competence in sag and tension checks 

  • Ability to assess rural clearance and structural compliance 

  • Advanced Excel skills 

  • AutoCAD capability desirable 

  • Desirable Experience 

  • Previous ESB Networks framework experience 

  • Experience working on rural MV schemes 

  • Exposure to timber-cut / forestry routing constraints 

  • Full driving license

  • Ensure process and interpret field survey data 

  • Responsible for developing MV OHL designs in GDesigner Design Software 

  • Ensure span lengths, pole sizing, stays and phasing are determined 

  • Ensure that pole duty and clearance compliance checks are complete 

  • Assess pole reuse vs replacement requirements 

  • Prepare ESB-compliant design outputs 

  • Implementation and maintenance of relevant approved processes, procedures, health and safety and technical standards and ensure their consistency with requirements of other departments 

  • Ensure that wayleave data is integrated into design deliverables 

  • Ensure that all project outputs will be consolidated into a structured Excel design sheet, incorporating: Existing and proposed network data, Pole and span schedules, Clearance notes, Wayleave contact information, Engaging with Landowners, in person and by phone. 

  • Needs to be willing to travel in an effort to carry out the required works.
