SHEQ Advisor – Power Division
"Every day brings new challenges—and the chance to make a real difference.”

When did you join KTL?
I joined KTL around mid-2024—marking about one transformative year with the Power Division.

What’s your background and how did you come into SHEQ?
I originally studied construction management and worked as a site engineer on one of Ireland’s largest €30 billion projects, supervising over 3,000 workers daily. After feeling stuck in routine, I took a two‑year career break in Canada. Upon returning, I realised I wanted a more people‑focused purpose. That led me to explore SHEQ; I enrolled in a part‑time Level 7 programme at UCD while working. It was tough juggling both, but I knew change was necessary. When the opportunity at KTL arose, I was drawn not just to the role—but to the company’s values and commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

What does your role involve at KTL?
Every day is different. My typical week includes site audits, toolbox talks, reviewing RAMS, supporting incident investigations, and working on quality and environmental initiatives. I'm on-site a lot—observing practices, coaching crews, and ensuring safety and environmental procedures are followed. Equally, I spend office time reviewing documentation, preparing site folders, and participating in SHEQ meetings. It’s fast-paced, hands-on, and deeply rewarding.

How would you describe KTL’s SHEQ culture?
From the start, it was clear that safety isn't just a department—it’s part of everyone’s drive. There’s a genuine commitment from management and crews to prioritise safety, quality, and environmental protection. What impressed me most was the shared ownership of safety not just personal, but for everyone on site. That sense of collective responsibility helped me integrate quickly and added real momentum to our continuous-improvement efforts.

How do you collaborate with different teams?
and with project managers and engineers. One of my proudest achievements has been building those connections. SHEQ works best when it’s shared—and collaborating across departments has not only strengthened our safety performance but also forged trust and mutual understanding.

What’s been the toughest part—and how did you overcome it?
Balancing a fast-paced role with limited prior experience was challenging. Each site brings its risks and dynamics. Fortunately, the support from my SHEQ team and crews has been incredible. We lean on each other—sharing knowledge, facing tough regulations, solving unexpected issues—and our shared focus on practical solutions helps us move forward together.

How has KTL supported your growth?
KTL has invested heavily in my development through training and certifications. Knowing the company is actively supporting my professional growth has been a huge motivator and has equipped me to take on more complex SHEQ challenges confidently.

How do seasonal changes impact your work?
Summer brings its own set of risks—heat exhaustion, dehydration, sun exposure, and increased fire risks. We’ve implemented a summer safety push that includes hydration stations, shaded breaks, sun-protection PPE, and extra equipment checks. Even as the seasons change, our priorities remain unwavering: safety, health, environment, and quality.

What do you find most rewarding?
It’s the people. Every time I see a crew apply a safety improvement, or receive thanks from the public for example, during storm recovery—those moments make the work profoundly meaningful. It reminds me that what we do is about care, not just compliance.

What advice would you give someone starting with SHEQ?
“Go for it. Stay curious, be proactive, and genuinely care.” SHEQ isn’t just about policies—it’s about creating environments where people can work safely and with pride. Building trust, translating technical standards into everyday actions, and being part of a supportive team make all the difference. And find a company like KTL that invests in your growth—it changes everything.

In three words, how would you describe your first year at KTL?
Challenging. Rewarding. Supportive.
Each word captures the courage needed to pivot, the fulfillment of purpose‑driven work, and the strength of a team that embraces and uplifts each other.
