Dominic Mackinnon

Technical Manager, KTL
“I feel valued as a member of the team.”

Tell us about yourself? Where are you from, where did you go to college, how/when did you join KTL?

I am from Newcastle upon Tyne. I went to college in Newcastle but left the city to go working away from home back in 1998, to work for Balfour Beatty a leading international infrastructure group. I’ve been on the move ever since and have worked in different countries along the way. Dublin, Ireland is now my base location.

What does your role involve?

I am a Technical Manager for KTL working with a leading telecommunications client in the UK. I work with the project team in various ways to help them with deployment related issues, to aid new suppliers, onboarding of new people and processes. Currently, I am upskilling the team in IT to access and utilise client tools that will help them to do their job more effectively. The role offers great variety – recently I was involved in the build of a Shared Rural Network site.

How has your role evolved while at KTL? What opportunities has it brought?

The role is gradually growing and getting busier. I’ve established some good relationships with the teams on different projects. We are currently working on a new project which will hopefully become a great news story for KTL, but we can’t say anything about that just yet. Inevitably, if successful it will mean more work for KTL and that can only be a good thing.

Could you describe your journey with KTL? What’s it been like?

My journey with KTL started long before I worked for KTL, as I had been involved with KTL whilst at Huawei many years ago. Additionally, whilst working for Vodafone, I was part of the team responsible for bringing in the Direct Partner model, writing the technical scope of works, leading the RFQ from a technical perspective and helping with the on-boarding. Therefore, my relationship goes back to 2012, however I’ve only actually worked for KTL since May 2021.

How would you describe the KTL culture?

In KTL, the team has a great attitude to work. I’m surrounded by a pragmatic, friendly and sensible team. They have a deep understanding of the business, and the team are adaptable to the many moving parts associated with telecom’s deployments.

What do you enjoy most about working at KTL?

KTL gives great flexibility and the ability to improve and upskill, for ourselves and the projects we’re working on. I feel valued as a member of the team.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I hope KTL will continue to strive and grow further forward, with that continued growth my role can also evolve in tandem. I’m always happy to be involved with new projects and look forward to seeing how things evolve.
