BEng CEng MICE

Civil/Structural Engineer (UK)
“Everyone has been very welcoming
and helpful at all levels and disciplines.”

Tell us about yourself?

In a galaxy far away, I completed a degree in Civil Engineering at Dundee Institute of Technology, as it was known back then. From there, I started my career in traditional civil/structural engineering before venturing into the world of mobile telecoms. I have been in the industry for around 28 years, attaining Chartered Civil Engineer status in 2008. During my tenure in the telecoms industry, I’ve carried out geotechnical surveys for tower manufacturer’s, I’ve had responsibility for the contract admin of site builds from tender through to handover completion, site (GF, RT, SW) designs for new build as well as upgrades throughout the UK. I even did a stint for the dark side, both acquisition and planning, before emerging back into the light, back to design.

What does your role involve?

My role involves all structural aspects of site design across multiple projects, from foundation checks of greenfield sites to structural steelwork design of rooftop sites and level 1 GDC appraisals, along with providing technical assistance with site designs.

How do you see your role evolving?

I’m only in the door at KTL but as time progresses, I would welcome the opportunity to help train up and coming aspiring engineers.

Could you describe your journey with KTL?

So far so good, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful at all levels and disciplines. There are several colleagues that I’ve worked with in the past, so it is good to catch up and work together again.

How would you describe the KTL culture?

There is an intense work ethic but at the same time, it is very friendly and relaxed.

What do you enjoy most about working at KTL?

The people. Although we are all individuals with different skill sets, everyone is valued and treated with respect from the top down. It is clear that KTL are invested in their workforce and prepared to spend time developing skill sets.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Retired on the golf course; however, “quite a few years to go yet”, so I’m looking forward to helping KTL continue to be an industry leader.
